Mylestom for a relaxing Holiday

Away from it all

At Castaway Cottage you are far from the hustle and bustle of city and town life.
The lounge is a special feature of Castaway Cottage. The decor is of soft golds and pastel blues reflecting the relaxed river and seaside location. The two sofas are like cherished friends who offer calming words of peace and comfort. Walls and furniture are decorated with colourful paintings of seaside scenes which along with the wall mounted row boats, carved model yachts and lighthouses create a homely and welcoming atmosphere. In the late afternoon, beams of sunlight stream in the west facing windows creating a golden glow and mellow mood - relaxing both body and soul.

The village of Mylestom was once a 'secret' river and seaside retreat for people from the surrounding district and for country folk from western New South Wales escaping summer's sizzling heat and cold winters.
And nothing much has changed. With a population of only 400-500 people, it is still a tranquil, quiet and picturesque river and seaside oasis. It's our secret too.

Things to see and do

When you stay at Castaway Cottage, you can choose to simply sit back and relax,  get active or a combination of both. Here are a few suggestions.

  • Open the front door, sit back in a wicker lounge chair and take in the restful river views.
  • Walk across the road and wander along the riverbank to the pontoon for views further up river to distant mountains.
  • Cast a line for flathead and bream from the pontoon or a shady spot along the river bank, and if lucky, take home fresh fish for breakfast, lunch or dinner.
  • Enjoy a picnic at one of the riverside tables set under shady Gum trees. Chicken and champagne at sunset is recommended.
  • Ride your bike along quiet riverside streets and rural back-roads of Mylestom and Repton.
  • Launch your canoe or kayak from the pontoon or boat ramp for a quiet paddle to see a different view of the scenery and to discover riverine wildlife.
  • Walk to the general store for a magazine or newspaper, then relax on the sun-deck with a coffee or cool drink.
  • Go beach combing along North Beach for miles and miles - you may be the only ones there. Watch for dolphins frolicking in the waves and keep a lookout for whales in season.
  • Swim or surf at North Beach just in front of the surf club - this beach is patrolled in the summer season only.
  • Drive to Tuckers Rocks and discover Littoral rainforest on the Bundageree Creek Walk. There are palms, strangler figs, vines and creepers, paperbarks and eucalypts all found along this mostly flat forest trail. Then, exit the forest and return via the beach.  Allow two hours or more for this adventure.
  • Motor up the Great Dividing Range and explore the World Heritage Area at Dorrigo. Here you can stroll the elevated Skywalk for views over rainforest tree tops and across the Bellinger Valley to the distant Coffs Coast shoreline.  Below are paved trails under forest giants where you can see modern day relatives of plant life that was once widespread when this land was millions of years younger.
  • Go boutique shopping and fossicking for arts and crafts in nearby Bellingen and Sawtell. While there enjoy a meal or cafe latte from one of the many sidewalk cafes and restaurants. Or journey to Urunga for a counter lunch at the local pub or Mylestom for a casual meal at the local recreation and bowling club.
At day's end, return to your cosy and comfortable cocoon - Castaway Cottage.
